THE JOY OF FREE FOOD

Although I don't know that mayapple jelly really is "free" food, seeing as how I got one cup of juice out of them, added 1 1/3 cups of sugar and pectin, and ended with 2 jars of jelly!

We call our long lane Mayapple Lane because of the mayapples growing in the woods there.

When this poisonous plant has enough energy to reproduce, it will grow  two leaves, which produce a white flower similar to an apple blossom.  This produces an edible fruit later in the summer, which the woodland animals almost always eat before we do!  But sometimes we beat them to it, and I spend a large amount of time to make a teeny bit of jelly...just...BECAUSE.

  1. So what does it taste like?  Looks lemony in the jars--good on a crumpet with butter or clotted cream?
WE made elderberry-apple crunch yesterday--very good!
Living off the land...well, a teensy bit!
